If you live near or travel on Interstate 70 between Greenfield and Indianapolis, Indiana you are likely aware of the of the mess that the construction zone has created for travelers since last week. According to a recent article by Richard Essex of Wish TV.com News 8, an INDOT spokesperson reported that more than a dozen crashes have occurred since the construction on the right lane of eastbound I-70 started. Many of these crashes have involved multiple semi tractors and trailers. INDOT reportedly has supervisors drive the construction zone on a regular basis to look for ways to improve safety, but crashes seem to happen night after night. News 8 found that many drivers are not paying attention to the more than 30 warnings signs of lane closure with drivers trying to merge at the last minute and causing others to have to slam on their brakes leading to bottle necks. INDOT does plan to add more waring signs and the construction zone will be patrolled by at least 2 police officers during most of the day.

Interstate Construction Zone Accident Statistics

  • Areas where traffic is entering or exiting the construction zone are the areas that are most dangerous.
  • Rear-end crashes are the most common type of crash.
  • According to INDOT, it takes just one minute more to travel through a two-mile work zone at 45 mph than 65 mph.
